fiction written by a fan of, and featuring characters from, a particular TV series, movie, etc.

Also: fanfic, fic

 

Ship: verb

To support a relationship between two or more characters from a TV series, movie, book, etc.

Other forms: shipper, shipping, ship (noun)

 

OTP: noun
(əʊ-tiː-pi)

Shortened form of One True Pairing, or the ship you ship more than all the other ships. Your most favorite ship.

 

BrOTP: noun
(biː-ɑːr-əʊ-tiː-pi)

Similar to OTP but used for shipping a strictly platonic friendship between two characters.

Example: Clint and Carol are an ultimate BrOTP. I could read about them wing-manning for each other in a million fics.

 

NOTP: noun
(ɛn-əʊ-tiː-pi)

A ship you absolutely cannot stand. Your One True Nope in any given fandom.

Example: “Look at them. They’re holding hands. I want them dead.”

AU/Alternate Universe: noun/adjective

A fic written in a universe different from the canon. Typically used to place characters in vastly different situations than they would face in their canon universe.

Examples: Western AU, Civil War AU, Police Officer AU

 

Crossover: noun

A mixing of characters and scenarios from two or more distinct fandoms/medias.

Example: SuperWhoLock—a crossover of Supernatural, Doctor Who, and Sherlock

 

DLDR: noun/tag

An acronym meaning Don’t Like, Don’t Read to imply that the fic has been tagged appropriately and the author will not accept criticism if the reader is offended by what they read.

Example: This fic is Harry/Hermione, No-Epilogue AU. DLDR—you’ve been warned!

Squick: noun/verb

An out-of-date word meaning a personal dislike or preference.

Example: Teacher/Student relationship fics are a squick of mine. I try not to read them.

 

Drabble: noun
(ˈdræbəl)

A fic that is exactly 100 words in length. No more, no less.

 

Reader-insert: noun

A fic written in second person, where the reader is the main character. The reader is usually referred to as (Y/N) to indicate the use of ‘Your Name’

Whumpy: adjective

  A hurt/comfort fic that focuses more on the hurt than the comfort. Typically angsty without express promise of a happy ending.

  Example: Fics that dive deep into what Bucky went through as the Winter Soldier are too whumpy when I’m looking for a fluffy distraction
